Week One

GILES DULEY

Bio

Giles Duley was born 1971 in London. After 10 years as an editorial photographer in the music and fashion industries in both the US and Europe, Duley now focuses his work on humanitarian projects.

Although documenting challenging, and at times, horrific situations, Duley captures the strength of those who fight their adversity rather than succumb. His photographs draw the viewer to the subject, creating intimacy and empathy for lives differing from ours only in circumstance.

Thoughts

I like the way he sets his subjects in a simple background and keeps the colour of the photo monochromic and melancholic. Despite the settings, the strong message can still be delivered across to the audience. From what I can see in his works, he captures people who are unfortunate physically challenged. Over the years, he documented refugees from different countries and each series of photographs tells a different story. His works give a silent and peaceful feeling. A simple photograph, however, able to evoked the sense of sadness in it. Through his subjects, tells a story. In Giles’s work there is a message that he is trying to bring across to the audience. From what I can infer, he is trying to show us the imperfections and less fortunate people/happenings in this world. All of us might be living in the same world but in a different environment. Sometimes, we people who are fortunate don’t often encounter such situations. Therefore, his works reminds us of how lucky we are and also to have empathy for people who are less fortunate. I can also see that he is trying to portray the strong fighting spirit these unfortunate people. They could be poor or physically challenged but because of what they had left makes them positive and contented with the most simple things in life.
